The future of immersive experiences is not confined within the walls of The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met). This renowned institution is pushing the boundaries of engagement and accessibility by leveraging virtual reality (VR) and immersive technologies.
During a recent visit to The Met with my daughter, I was captivated by the Temple of Dendur, an ancient Egyptian monument that has found a new home in New York City. Little did I know then that this monument had an incredible story of its own, one that The Met is now bringing to life through an innovative VR experience.

The Met's immersive project, Dendur Decoded, developed in collaboration with Atopia, offers a unique perspective on the Temple of Dendur. It allows visitors, both in-person and remotely, to explore the temple's history and context through interactive storytelling and digital reconstruction. This approach, as Brett Renfer, Project Manager for Emerging and Immersive Technology at The Met, explains, is about "showing rather than telling."
What makes this particularly fascinating is the way The Met has chosen a widely recognized monument, one that generates a lot of curiosity and questions, as a starting point. By placing visitors within the story, the museum is creating a more engaging and memorable experience, one that goes beyond traditional exhibit text and displays.
A Broader Purpose
However, Dendur Decoded serves a purpose that extends beyond visitor engagement. The digital assets created for this experience can also support conservation efforts, research, documentation, and future interpretation of The Met's collection. This project, therefore, has multiple lives, catering to both public-facing experiences and the museum's long-term preservation goals.
Building an Immersive Experience
The development of Dendur Decoded involved a collaborative effort between The Met and Atopia. The Met played a pivotal role in shaping the experience and its educational goals, utilizing its extensive archive of 3D assets and scans. These assets, originally created for conservation and research, were adapted and optimized for VR, preserving their historical accuracy.
Atopia, with its expertise in game development and immersive design, brought a unique perspective to the project. Together, the two organizations translated historical research, photography, and 3D scans into a VR experience designed to immerse visitors in the story of the Temple of Dendur.
Reach and Accessibility
One of the most intriguing aspects of The Met's immersive projects is their focus on reach and accessibility. While the experiences are available on Meta Quest headsets, the museum deliberately prioritized web accessibility. Approximately 85% of traffic to these experiences comes through web browsers, highlighting the importance The Met places on making these experiences accessible to a wider audience.
This philosophy is also reflected in the design of the experiences themselves. As someone who has spent considerable time in VR, I found the controls intuitive and user-friendly, a testament to The Met's commitment to universal design. The experiences are welcoming to newcomers while not alienating experienced VR users, a delicate balance that The Met has successfully achieved.
A Long-Term Perspective
The Met's approach to immersive technology is marked by a long-term vision. The museum's 3D imaging teams are creating detailed digital records of artifacts and environments, often for conservation and research purposes.
